In the Name of Allaah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The first question people ask is what is Islam?

Islam:

As defined by the Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, is the religious faith of Muslims including belief in Allah as the sole deity and in Muhammad as his prophet.

"The word Islam is a word derived from the Arabic root "sulm" which means among other things peace purity, submission, and obedience.  In the religious sense the word Islam means the submission to the Will of God and obedience to His Law."1

In order to answer the question, What is Islam?  Let us explore the birth of Islam, its basic concepts, and how it pertains to its followers.  The Birth Of Islam,  I will cover here.  The basic concepts are covered under the Five Pillars of Islam.  The third topic will be covered under The Region of Islam.

Birth of Islam

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born in the present country of Saudi Arabia about A.D. 571.  He was the son of Abd Allah and Aminah.  Because both his parents died, his father before he was born and his mother shortly after his birth, he was raised by his uncle Abd al-Muttalib.  Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel at about the age of 40 years.  It was through these revelations that the Qur'an came into being and Islam was born.  Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died in the year 632 A. D.  On my links page, I have sites that go into more detail on life of the prophet and his role in revealing Islam.
